Inspirational, self-help, and personal development books and courses can produce one of two experiences. Which one do you seek?
First, let me clarify their intent: to be a powerful medium for change. They are meant to bring forth thoughts-> that lead to faith -> that lead to ideas -> that lead to new actions. And then new results are born! They offer what is meant to be a dynamic process that leads to real change.
But, this is often what happens…
The inspiration is used as a lifeline to keep afloat, to stop from drowning, but not to get you out of the water. It is the pause, the reprieve, the moment of rest so that you can gather your strength and keep your hope alive. This is enough to get you firmly on your way if you’ve just taken a slight detour.
But when it’s a real question of whether you are on your right path, free to express your true self and talents, living your right livelihood, then something more is actually being sought than inspiration – and it is critical to know this distinction.
In such times of true soul searching and potent desire, we must grab the lifeline with all our hearts and insist on being pulled forward – because anything less will just have us saved from drowning for the moment.
You have to know where you are at and what you need.
Demanding to be pulled in by the lifeline is a whole new energy on the other hand. It says “YES” clearly. It says “NO more of what has been”. It knows that no great feats are done without commitment, persistence, and true love. It says, “I am ready, show me the way, let’s do it”. It is not a moment of pause so you can back away quietly.
Instead it is a dynamic energy, a force, a heave-ho in the right direction – right as rain you might say (needed, appropriate, essential, hoped-for, perfect, absolutely right, on track), the only thing that will put things right…and you’ll know it within.
You can skirt around the issue as long as you like, but know that a new force is required, the one that will see all the hiding places of your true expression and dreams and bring them out to the light of day so they can thrive fearlessly.
In instances when the former reprieve is chosen whilst the latter – heave ho – is needed, you won’t get results.
But when you are ready to demand new results, you will have to think new thoughts, allow new ideas, change your behavior and approach, and be willing to have what you want.
And then you will.
The “new” part requires a new perspective, a new thought pattern, a new way of being, a new way of acting. That is where books and courses can prep you, but they rarely take you to the finish line.
They don’t give you personal attention, ‘hold your hand’ when needed, give compassion or a kick in the butt, send you to resources outside themselves, teach you exactly what you need to learn in the moment, or evolve with you. They are not “alive”.
For this, you must go to a living being – which is why teachers, guides, coaches exist. The best ones know the path from experience and can light the way.
