How’s your transition into fall?

Transitions in life can be challenging. The shift of seasons alone can create waves in our life. How’s your transition into the fall of 2013? Mine is more of a challenge than I recall having for a while. The reason being that more shifted through the summer this year than normal, some of which I created and some which came on its own.

I had two people close to me move to another city for work, both locations requiring plane rides. While I do my best to take change in stride, it definitely has affected me. Relationships are important to me and it is difficult to handle the space left behind, even though I have more than enough things to fill it should I choose. Just not the same.

I chose to let go of a part-time career coaching stint with an MBA program that had been a fit for a while. Upon launching my new coaching program – Living in Technicolour – it was quickly apparent that my time would be better used to deliver services that I loved and would make the difference in the world that I now have the capacity and experience to make. I simple couldn’t do everything and decided to be where my heart is and focus my time more wisely for the long run. While totally desired on my part, it was an adjustment of my daily schedule, focus, and way of working. I had to re-create my daily structure. Sometimes these changes just need time.

The cliched yet true feelings I have of the weather changing is also affecting me.  We had such a bright summer so the sudden dark clouds, rain, and recent thunder all has me feeling like being caught in a downpour.  Some of it is actually productive – getting me to sit down and work, yet I find myself longing for sunshine and feeling duped!

How we handle transitions in our life can make all the difference. For me the changes outside are bringing up the changes I’ve been through and all the feelings I have about them. What I appreciate most about the fall is a return of some routine, and getting to teach Nia again.

Here are some quick tips for going through a transition:

  • Acknowledge your feelings.
  • Ask for support.
  • Write, dance, walk, exercise…on a regular basis. Movement is so helpful to keep our energy flowing.
  • Focus on what you want to experience or achieve this fall. Get excited about what’s to come instead of what’s completed.
  • Commit to things that are most important to you. What is a priority? Get juiced up about it and take action.
  • Schedule some fun things that are perfect for now.
  • And buy a new cozy sweater, jacket or jeans…something that will make you so happy to wear 🙂

As simple as they may sound, they can be lifesavers and true energizers.

This post is me transitioning back into writing and to let you know if you’re going through this too, you’re not alone!
