Read any good books lately? Years ago, I got into the habit of noting down quotes I loved. Sometimes it was just a few, other times, it took pages. Maybe one day I’ll know why I’ve been collecting them, but for now they offer the pleasure of being reminded of a thought or idea that I value. I happen to read non-fiction 95% of the time, that’s just what draws me. Last night I was looking through old files and began to open some of them. And to my joy, I found some quotes I love and decided to share them with you today.
“For beauty is not a commodity but part and parcel of the inherent structure of the universe, and as such, it is revealed in the natural expressions of those who are motivated by love.” Laurence G. Boldt, The Tao of Abundance
“An envelope is one of the few things in the modern world we seal, thus creating a private space for expression. Stamps are usually not mere tokens of monetary exchange, but small paintings, the closest thing we have to medieval miniature art…” Thomas Moore, Soul Mates
“Finding words that truly express our feelings and experiences is an achievement of a high order. Bringing a dimension of style to our conversations and letters, diaries and gatherings, homes and workplaces, goes a long way toward making life more soulful. In these areas, too, of course, we are always dealing with individual taste, but that is the beauty of it. Individuality is an important aspect of the soul, and one of the products of living with genuine style is self-expressiveness and personality.” Thomas Moore, Soul Mates
” …the individual is sacred. For it is in the solitary mind and soul of the individual that the battle between good and evil is waged and ultimately won or lost.” M. Scott Peck, People of the Lie
“What a gift, to be able to look squarely at the utterly impossible thing that is looming up in front of you and instead of running away to recognize it as somehow familiar and something you’ve dealt with before and are pretty sure you can deal with again.” Carol Lee Flinders, Enduring Lives – Portraits of Women and Faith in Action
I collect quotes also…I think you might enjoy the following one:
“For the great enemy of truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived and dishonest; but the myth – persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”
