Do you have to heal before you take action?

The field of psychology and some of the new age movement can leave us feeling like we must heal everything that’s “wrong” within us before anything will change in our life. We worry about our wounded inner child and wonder what it’ll take for her/him to finally be ok, enough, healthy, good, smart, successful or whatever you deem as worthy.

Do you believe that there is something inherently wrong or wounded? Or, have you used this an an excuse not to move forward in certain parts of your life? It is rather convenient and the best of us can get confused enough to fall into this trap. I’ve heard people grip firmly to this belief, all the while unaware of how much they’re resisting change, even into fulfillment. It’s like it’s such a part of their identity, they worry about not knowing who they’d be otherwise.

I believe we arrive completely whole into this world. There is nothing broken in a true sense of the word. We’re more like mirrors that got dusty or even grimy over the years through false beliefs or assumptions or lack of attention. What we really require is a removal of what’s in the way of seeing clearly, so we can see an accurate reflection, so we can keep arriving at the truth. And this more often than not benefits from others being our mirrors, and ideally, holding us in high regard at the same time.

Many of today’s parents are continuously pouring love onto their children in the hopes that they won’t be wounded and suffer from a lack of self-esteem as they did. This is a noble desire, however nothing will prevent a child or adult from going through life, real life which includes happiness and heartbreak if they wish to live in truth. It’s a part of the journey.

Instead, we all need to learn to listen deeply to ourselves, to trust our inner guidance, to go for that which we truly desire and to learn to become resilient. We need to learn that failure is such an important part of the journey. It toughens us up. It makes up go back to the drawing board and get even clearer. It makes us reach beyond who we thought we were to become who we really are.

There are thousands of stories of people who rose from the most painful and difficult places to succeed in ways that most of us can barely fathom. Our past has no bearing on our future. It can impact us, but we are only tied to it by choice. We can let it go, just like a balloon into the sky. This can take work, yes, but it is totally a choice.

What would you do, who would you become if you stopped right now and went inside yourself to see what your heart beats for? And then listened intently to it, receiving its message? Maybe you need to clear away some other noise or eliminate old voices. Do it. Think anew. Think from the present moment. Feel into what makes your eyes twinkle. Know that this is what’s real. Then ask, what is my next step?

This is where the real journey begins, by taking the next step and next. Learn the lesson. Ask for help. Be vulnerable in your wanting. And like rocket fuel, trust that the power to take you where you want is available when you go for it.

Interestingly, often the action takes care of the healing, for it comes from a place of empowerment.
