I’m of the belief that if you can move, you can dance. Likewise, Edwin Coppard (wild voice teacher extraordinaire) says if you have a voice you can sing. In his one-day workshop, he proved that. Everyone was at different levels when it came to having command of their voice, but magic was created. Heartfelt lyrics from people who’d never written a song blew us all away along with some beautiful melodies and voices.
The day began with play, always a great place to start and get people having fun without being self-conscious. Edwin led activities with sound and simple movement to get ourselves more present in our bodies since that’s where the sound arises. He shared his beliefs about song and the importance of having it active in all communities to create and nurture culture. We all know that before music became an industry, it was practiced by many and not something for a blessed few. Our voice is an intimate connection to who we are, what we feel, and what we want or need to say. Music heals. Music inspires. I agree with Edwin, that it is up to us to join in.
While I participated wholeheartedly, I admit, I still feel shy to sing in front of friends or family. Why is it easier in front of a room full of strangers?? One day, I’ll bridge that gap, I just know it.
Edwin works with archetypes as well which is exciting work and a great metaphor for other parts of our life: the magician, the lover, the warrior, and the sovereign. We had fun playing with each of these.
The culmination of the day was a concert put on by us all. Amazing. Awe-inspiring. Sacred. Beautiful. Fun. No wonder Tony Robbins invited Edwin to work with him. He will help you get in touch with you through your wild voice. Go on, I dare you to sing, sing a song!
