Lesson 2 of 5 from 2015: Dream Lightly but Surely
My openness to dreaming about things I want has created lots of fun and exciting experiences and what I’d call miracles. I always find it amusing how at Christmas there are so many movies about believing and wishing and expecting, and then the rest of the year adults tell you the exact opposite!
I’ve shared these in past newsletters, but I believe they’re worth repeating. There are some things in life I desire deeply yet don’t put a lot of effort into. This may seem counterproductive however it has worked time and time again. The places I desire to put effort – because it feels good to do so – I do.
Two fun examples include getting to see U2 and Madonna in concert. I have a thing about staying on the phone for hours or lining up to get tickets. It’s not my thing, although I’ve gone that route in the past. It ends up being stressful and anxiety-producing, so I don’t do it anymore.
In both cases though, I kind of expected to be there. Planning months in advance for anything is not my thing either. I operate best on an in-the-moment spontaneous and fully present kind of way. (Know thyself.)
So 2 weeks before U2 I began realizing they were arriving. My energy began to rise and I could feel my desire heighten. I had to be there and I could feel it! Then in a casual conversation with a friend, I learned that he was trying to sell his ticket! Done. The last time I saw them (in the 90s!), I also had a friend who last minute had an extra ticket. I say U2 needs me there and so that’s why I always show up now. 🙂
As for Madonna, I went online 1 week before and to my surprise, found 2 tickets at the price I wanted and didn’t think would be available – I also wanted to go with someone who’d love it as much as I would. And I had made a new friend that was as excited as I was, so I got to experience it with her and we had a blast (with a great view of the show).
More recently is a big ticket example. For over a year, I wanted to work privately with a coach who I believed would be able to support me in the way I now needed. Given her high-end rates, I wasn’t ready to reach out, but kept that desire alive within me – clearly yet lightly. I trusted the time would come. A year later, as I’d been in touch with her through social media and another group program she had going on, she decided to reach out to me after getting an intuitive hit to do so. Next thing I know, I discover it’s not “impossible” to work with her (although still a big stretch), AND she learns that she’s flying to Vancouver (she’s never been here) and can do a day-long intensive in person with me. Miraculous.
Lesson 2: When you can hold your dreams lightly yet surely AND be ready to take action when they’re in front of you (no matter what you have to do) magic happens. The things you want are always closer than they appear. Being prepared also means being prepared to say “yes” instead of the old dream-killing, “maybe later“.
