Do you live in a small space, less than a 1000 sqft? Well, then you know there is an art to making the space work for you and look beautiful. I’ve always loved small spaces and their intimacy. They also push you to be creative and resourceful, shifting things around as you and your needs change.
You may notice a fairly new page on my blog/site called “Evolving Spaces”. It will highlight spaces that have incorporated style, beauty, comfort and creativity. There’s something about being able to peek into real homes to see what people have done and this page will allow you to do just that.
Here’s my first interview for Evolving Spaces, with Daphne Roubini, a musician and bio-energy healer. When I first stepped into her home, I was delighted with the attention given to style and function. Here’s a sneak peak inside her personal oasis.
What inspires you in decorating your space?
In this apartment, I wanted nature to be the main theme and kept the design minimal and neutral so the nature outside the window could be highlighted. (the apartment faces Lost Lagoon)
What’s your favourite piece?
My silk and wool area carpet that I found at Winners. It provides space to hang out, listen to music, and lie on the floor.
What influences your taste?
I like the juxtaposition of retro and modern and am inspired by the mid-century modern movement. I like textures in a minimalist room to add softness.
What creates a sacred space for you?
Clean lines, no clutter. Everything in the home holds energy, so I choose it intentionally.
How does personal expression relate to human development?
The external world mirrors what’s going on in a person’s life. If everything is energy, then environment is important. It enhances my life.
How does the structure of look of the original space affect your choice in decorating?
When I moved in there, I thought the floor was ugly, but with the furniture I chose, it goes and I like it now. I also chose a darker room for our bedroom, like a cocoon, due to all the white around. I also read an article that said a darker bedroom helps with sleep and anti-aging!
Your bathroom is so colourful and bold. What inspired you?
The fixtures were all a peach colour that I couldn’t change, so I decided to go with it and create a bolder focus point that catches attention.
You offer bio-energy healing. People in Vancouver are easily drawn to physical wellness and healing modalities, but less conscious about style. What is your thoughts on this?
When my clients are ready to change their lives, I also encourage them to de-clutter their life, their wardrobe and their home to allow for the new. It’s another level of personal expression. It’s not about money, it’s about the thought that goes into their life.
