The other day I read a special report (paid marketing feature) by American Express in the National Post. It stated that “more Canadians are rethinking what life is all about and finding ways to enrich their lives through meaningful experiences. We call these people ‘Potentialists’ as they vow to realize life’s full potential and embrace the movement called lateral living.” Cool. This is a movement I’ve believed in and worked towards for over 20 years, and one which has been a key intent in my business.
The word “meaning” is critical. We can all set goals and achieve them once we have the tools, however for me, life begins to feel empty very quickly if that’s all I’m doing. I constantly have to return to meaning so that my actions are coupled with sincere feeling and fulfillment. When there is something deeper in the journey towards achievement, we naturally enjoy the process. We may succeed or we may fail in our efforts (usually there are failures that later lead to real success); however the meaning gives value to the journey.
Along with meaning is Joy – the inner sensation that is beyond mere happiness, the one that shows up to say we are truly alive and engaged in our life. Joy can accompany difficult times in our lives as well as the happy parts when we show up and be real. It is there with us because in those moments we are being ourselves, not a mask of the achiever/professional/parent/partner/etc. who things he/she should do xyz…
Meaning and Joy make life rewarding and independent of success and failure. This is a movement that I support 100%. What holds meaning for you? Discover it and life will get richer immediately.
