This Saturday the 25th of September marks the 9th Open House at the Scotiabank Dance Centre, Canada’s foremost dance facility. It is an absolute delight to teach Nia in this space. There is something about being in a place dedicated to something important for the human soul. The message here is that all bodies are welcome to move, to dance, to share their spirit. This is what happens here day in and day out and so an energy builds supporting such expression.
Something that impressed me from the beginning was that the Dance Centre is a place for professional dance companies like Ballet BC AND at the same time it welcomes beginners, whether children or adults, who choose to step in and take a chance at something new. For some the word ‘dance’ equals fear of being exposed in some way. I can see why they would have this thought if they are not comfortable in their skin. Yet, that is the very reason I would urge such a person to step in and simply give something new a try. The joy will be that movement is beautiful (yes, even for you self-confessed uncoordinated types!), and once even a little bit of self-consciousness is dropped, your spirit will begin to come out with an amazing sense of freedom. Dance is simply movement and we move everyday. Whether we know it or not, our movement is always seen. But more importantly it is felt. And once a person slips into their skin, that feeling is powerful.
Join in this Saturday. Try something new. I will be there leading a Nia class for newcomers and ongoing students from 12:00 -1:30. There will be a warm-up, a full Nia class, an opportunity to ask questions, and to celebrate the joy of movement in a safe, welcoming, and infectiously playful space. Bring a friend or two. Come dressed ready to move, stretch and sweat. Bring some water. No shoes required, but soft-soled shoes are ok. Live life more boldly and watch your own transformation take place.
