Where to shop? The real truth.

The most common question I’ve received over the years when people admire my look is, “Where do you shop?” The truth is that it doesn’t matter where I shop – it should be about you. And if it were that easy and really about naming some stores, we wouldn’t have so many people disappearing into the crowds with their lack of personal style or trying too hard and feeling uncomfortable.

If you insist though and really are curious, the truth is that I happen to shop “everywhere”. Seriously. This means I shop in some trendy chain shops, some independent stores, occasionally thrift shops, and sometimes a fancier place. In the last month, I’ve bought at Aritzia, BCBG, Hollywood boutique in Yaletown, and from the living room of a friend of a friend! And I shop when travelling (whether that’s a nearby city or a country that requires a flight).  I shop often while running other errands in case I come across something perfect for me, in which case it’s a lovely surprise.

Only occasionally do I shop when I need something. Meanwhile, the average person chooses that as their reason for shopping. They are looking for an item for an event, an interview, a date, or a change in season. Personally, it’s just too much pressure and I don’t want to get something just because I need it.  That could be a real waste of money. I want to love it.

Another reality is that change is constant in the business and fashion worlds. Buyers change within stores and fashion changes. Therefore, my favourite shops change regularly. In fact, one of them – an independent one – just disappeared, to my absolute horror. So, I always tell my clients that a shop may fit them one season and not work at all for them the next. It doesn’t mean you should keep shopping when the clothes don’t work for you anymore!

Understanding your body type and how to flatter it, combined with some awareness of trends, goes so much further in making a good investment.

Guidelines:

  • Shop in short spurts and in a variety of shops, even seemingly unlikely ones.
  • Get out of your comfort zone and experiment to discover what really  looks good.
  • Keep essentials in your closet (e.g. the perfect jeans, t-shirt, blazer, dress) and add to them with items that are more personal to you.
  • Learn how to flatter your body type. Everyone can be flattered!
  • Notice trends, use them, but don’t get lost by following them.
  • Have fun. It’s not meant to be so serious. Flashes of oohing and aahing are good signs.

If you don’t have the time to do all this or simply need help, that’s where I can come in and do it for you!
