Recently I completed a Styling course at Blanche Macdonald (fashion applied arts school). As our final project, our job was to style a photo shoot. This brought together two elements I love – fashion and photography. I chose two looks, one more sophisticated and the other total fun. Both looks used colour in different ways – the first more subdued with earthy and green tones and the other pop-out colours that might suit an exotic bird. Check ’em out!
This outfit is layered with a few beautiful pieces. The knitted long top is belted in the photo to make it look like a dress, however without the belt, it could be a light wrap over the shiny green tank top. For more contrast I added a deep orange sleeveless top that peaks out at the edges of the shoulders. The model is dressed in a dark brown mini skirt which could be exchanged for a longer skirt to transition into the workplace along with a professional-looking top.
The delight of this multi-coloured knit is that you can bring out any colour in it by the top worn with it – in this case, yellows, browns, oranges, greens – making it very versatile.
While this exotic bird look may not be everyone’s thing, the pieces can be easily matched with other items. The beautiful silk blue top can be worn with simpler leggings, over a fun skirt or even with a pair of jeans. The pink feather vest can add glam over a sheath dress or with jeans as well. The leggings could be matched with a long dark grey t-shirt. And on those wilder days, you can bring them altogether!
Mixing and matching is lots of fun and it extends the wearability of your clothing.
