As a child, there were a number of things I loved about this fun made-up day called Halloween. Dressing up was a favourite part of course, but it was also an adventure to be out and about at night as a child. Knocking on neighbours’ doors made it feel like a community – perhaps the only time that adults connected to the children in the neighbourhood. And I carried my little orange Unicef box knowing that my collections, love and Halloween joy would be carried all the way to a child in Africa or somewhere special. Really, how could life get more fulfilling than that? Costume, adventure, mystery, community, gifts, and charity.
Fast forward decades later to yesterday…I was having lunch with a friend and we were both admiring the adorable costume a young girl wore. I asked my friend, “What do you think the world would be like if children got to dress up in costumes all the time?” And she replied, “Oh, it would be SO different.” Yes, I believe it would. I sense that it would connect us to another world, the one of our fantasies, fears, joys, curiousities and dreams in a way that isn’t so illusive. Are you willing to connect to the fun and beautiful parts of your desires and willing to show them to the world? Or will you opt for the scary or ‘dark side’ costumes? This could be a brave step towards acknowledging the parts that you want to be accepted, understood, and given space. As humans, it’s amazing how few emotions we allow to be seen or expressed. And this hiding keeps us bound up and unable to feel whole and truly powerful. Playing with all of who we are allows us to take things more lightly while uncovering the shadows and dancing in our full light.
It is so fun to see children and adults dressed up to celebrate, whether they be trick or treating, going to a party, or at their job! So, what about you? Play with clothing, make-up, wigs, props and see what new elements come out – whether you leave the house or not! (My only regret on Halloween has been not dressing up enough! And at a party, you just look weird if you come as ‘normal’. haha) You’ll use your creativity, have fun, discover more of who you are, and transform for a day or night -> realizing how easy it can be. So, what will it be for you: obvious, safe, daring, unexpected, or maybe, beyond your wildest dreams?
