Lessons in Failure

Through to my 20s, I didn’t know much about failure. I lived my life by my strengths and going for that which was challenging, yet also available to me. If something didn’t happen, I mourned my loss and moved on. It was a innocent approach to life.

In my 30s I began to dig deeper and discover what was within me that I hadn’t yet explored or seen. Disappointments and “failures” increased. Still, it was an awesome time. I had many blissful and soul-satisfying experiences. Some of my favourite moments in life occurred. The roller coaster got a little higher.

Then, I turned up the heat on myself in my 40s. I figured I made it thus far living a fairly charmed life…let’s test it out! Perhaps a crazy response, but I noticed that there was more in me wanting to come out and that required some pressure and I wanted to know how I would handle that.

The number of “failures” grew. It was a bit shocking. I wasn’t used to it. But I learned the most valuable lesson – I am resilient. I don’t actually take things as seriously as it may seem. I am willing to keep going. And most importantly – I am more committed to even go beyond what I set out for because I see how available it is. My standards are getting higher.

The word “failure” is losing its power.

Now, I notice…I laugh far more, forgive quicker, love lighter and deeper. I’ve had complete strangers ask me why I am so peaceful or happy.

I don’t let “failures” stop me. I allow myself to be LIT from the inside.
